Cristo Redentor Location: Getting There and More!
Your journey to the top begins at the base of Corcovado Mountain at the Cosme Velho Station (Estação de Trem do Corcovado). The most convenient way to reach the station is by taking a rideshare (like Uber) or a yellow taxi directly to the entrance. If you prefer public transit, take the Metro to Largo do Machado station and catch the “Integration Bus” that drops you right outside the ticket office.

Cristo Redentor, one of Brazil’s most iconic landmarks, is easily accessible through various transportation options suitable for international tourists looking to explore this renowned attraction.

Driving yourself is not recommended because private vehicles are strictly prohibited from driving up to the statue, and there is no parking available at the Paineiras Visitor Center or the Cosme Velho station. If you have a rental car, it is best to leave it at your hotel or a parking garage in a nearby neighborhood like Botafogo or Copacabana. From there, take a quick Uber or taxi directly to the Cosme Velho station to catch your train without the stress of finding a parking spot.

For the most authentic and scenic experience, take the Corcovado Train (Trem do Corcovado) from Cosme Velho Station at the base of the mountain. This historic electric train cuts directly through the lush Tijuca National Forest, treating you to jungle views and glimpses of the city during the steep, 20-minute ascent. Because seats are limited and departures run every 20–30 minutes, tickets often sell out days in advance. We strongly recommend booking your time slot online to guarantee your seat and skip the long lines at the ticket office.

Several public bus lines connect the main tourist zones of Rio to the Cosme Velho neighborhood. If you are coming from Copacabana, Ipanema, or Leblon, look for the “Circular 1” or bus lines like the 583. If you are coming from the Centro or Lapa area, lines like the 180 or 422 will drop you close to the station. Once you get off at the São Judas Tadeu church stop, the train station is just across the street.

For experienced cyclists looking for a serious workout, it is possible to ride up the mountain road (Estrada das Paineiras) to the Paineiras Visitor Center. Be warned: this is a steep, challenging climb shared with vans and taxis, so it requires a high level of fitness and caution. Once you reach the Visitor Center, you cannot cycle the final stretch to the statue; you will need to park your bike (locks required) and purchase a van ticket for the final ascent.

If you are an adventurous hiker, you can reach the statue via a trail that starts at Parque Lage near the Botanical Garden. The hike takes about two to three hours and winds steeply through the Atlantic Rainforest, offering a raw connection with nature. However, this route is physically demanding and security on the trail can fluctuate, so it is vital to check current local safety advice and travel in a group if you choose this path.
